Lawyers can now start a newspaper of their own: Sebastian Paul slams boycott

A day after the Ernakulam bar association passed a resolution in view of the on-going lawyer-media scuffle, to boycott all newspapers from Saturday, lawyer and media critic Sebastian Paul used sarcasm to hit out at the move.

Taking to Facebook on Saturday, Sebastian Paul said that boycott was a Gandhian way of protesting against what is undesirable.

“So, there is nothing inherently wrong with the lawyers in Ernakulam deciding to boycott newspapers. But is it possible to stubbornly take a decision to not read the newspapers just so that they can get even?” Sebastian Paul wrote.

“Shouldn’t they at least show some regard to their children?” he added.

Sebastian Paul then went on to say that the lawyer fraternity can now contemplate starting a newspaper on their own.

“Considering the number of lawyers in Kerala and the strength of their unity, the newspaper enterprise is sure to succeed. It will also be a way of proving that there is an alternative for everything,” he wrote.

Sebastian Paul was suspended from Kerala High Court Advocate’s Association in October this year, for allegedly defaming the lawyer fraternity. In a speech made in Kozhikode, he had pinned the responsibility of the tension between media persons and lawyers, solely on the lawyer community.
