Malayalam superstar Mohanlal announced a few weeks ago that he will be debuting as a director soon. The star currently has several acting assignments needing his attention and his directorial project will go on the floors later this year.

Reports suggest that the film is based on Barroz, a Portuguese mythical figure, said to be the guardian of Vasco da Gama’s valuable treasures for 400 years. Titled Barroz – Guardian of D’Gama’s Treasure, the film, Mohanlal revealed earlier, will be in 3D and can be enjoyed by both kids and adults. Jijo Punnoose, who introduced 3D to Indian film audiences with the iconic My Dear Kuttichathan is penning the story for Barroz. The latest update about this film is that Mohanlal has roped in acclaimed cinematographer KU Mohanan to crank the camera. Being a 3D film, the cinematographer’s role in the making of this project will be critical.

Trade sources report that stars from Hollywood and other film industries across the country will be roped in for the film. The shooting of this film is expected to commence in October this year and will take place in different locations, including Goa, Portugal, etc. Being a high-budget movie with several actors in the star cast, the film will be dubbed in different languages, we hear. Antony Perumbavoor of Aashirvad Cinemas is bankrolling this movie.

Meanwhile, Mohanlal has just completed the historical Marakkar: Arabikadalinte Simham. The film, made on a budget of Rs 100 crores, is produced jointly by Antony Perumbavoor, Santhosh T Kuruvilla and CJ Roy under their respective banners Aashirvad Cinemas, Confident Group and Moonshot Entertainment. Award-winning director Priyadarshan is wielding the megaphone for this venture. The film’s technical crew includes cinematographer Tirru and editor MS Ayyappan Nair. While the film is scheduled for release early next year, Mohanlal has Big Brother and Ittymaani: Made in China in his kitty right now.
