A 21-year-old man died after allegedly being beaten up by residents of Kallahangaraga village in Karnataka’s Gulbarga taluk for knocking down an old man with his two-wheeler.

According to the investigating officer at Narona Police Station, 21-year-old Ambareesh Poojary and his friend were riding back to their village - Javalaga at around 9.30 pm on Sunday.

“Ambareesh and his friend Ningappa had gone to Kalburgi town for some work at the RTO office. They were returning to their village. At around 9.30 pm, when they were on the main road which connects Kallangaraga and Thinchasur, they rammed into an a 60-year-old man named Mallayya Kalaal,” investigating officer Gajanan told TNM.

As passers-by saw Mallayya cry out in pain, the news of his injury quickly spread and around 30 residents of Kallahangaraga including Mallayya’s family members gathered at the accident spot.

“By the time the people gathered, Ambaressh and Ningappa had already called for an ambulance and Mallayya was taken to the local PHC. He has a broken limb and is recovering. But when the residents of the village gathered at the accident spot, they did not allow Ambareesh and Ningappa to pass and beat up Ambareesh,” officer Gajanan added.

According to an eyewitness, who requested anonymity, the residents of the village allegedly beat Ambareesh until he was unconscious and threw him into a well located about 20 km away from the accident spot.

“I witnessed this. It was one man against 25-30 people. They thrashed him brutally despite his pleas. Then they threw him in the well. Now they are saying that Ambareesh jumped into the well himself,” the eyewitness alleged.

When Ambareesh’s parents found out that he was dead, they visited the Narona Police. However, the residents of the village allege that Ambareesh was trying to escape the beating and jumped into the well, officer Gajanan said.

Presently, the Narona Police have registered a case under sections 306 (abetment to suicide), 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons), 143 (unlawful assembly), 147 (punishment for rioting) and 149 (punishment for unlawful assembly and persecution of common object).

“We are still investigating the case to determine whether Ambareesh fell into the well of his own accord or if he was killed,” officer Gajanan added.

Earlier in January, residents near Bullali junction in Chikkaballapura had thrashed a biker, who allegedly ran over and killed a 11-year-old girl. Angered by the girl’s death the residents had tied up 30-year-old techie Nikith and beat him up.
