Revolutionary Marxist Party leader KK Rema has been booked for referring to CPI(M) Vadakara candidate P Jayarajan as a ‘murderer’. The ruling party’s State Secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan submitted the complaint on Monday. Jayarajan was named an accused in Rema’s husband TP Chandrasekharan’s murder.

According to reports, the Vadakara first class magistrate court issued the order and the case was filed under section 171 G of the Indian Penal Code which deals with false statements in connection with an election. Rema made the statements in a media interaction in Kozhikode following a party meet held by the RMP in the district.

Speaking to TNM, Rema said that she did not see anything wrong in what she had stated. “P Jayarajan is an accused in two murder cases and several criminal cases. He has even mentioned the same in his affidavit. This is what I had said and I don’t see what is defamatory about the statement,” Rema said.

Jayarajan along with 2 other CPI(M) leaders were named accused in the 2012 murder case of TP Chandrasekharan, Rema’s late husband, who founded the Revolutionary Marxist Party after breaking away from CPI(M).

Jayarajan is also accused in the murder of Ariyil Abdul Shukoor, a 22-year-old IUML leader from Kannur who was killed in 2012. Jayarajan along with Kallyiasseri MLA TV Rajesh were accused of conspiracy in the case.

“They [CPI(M)] are too scared ahead of the Lok Sabha elections as they are losing their stronghold, which is why they are trying to foist cases on anyone who talks about their candidates. I will fight legally and politically if need be,” Rema added.

Ahead of the elections, the Revolutionary Marxist Party (RMP) has also chosen to back the UDF candidate in Vadakara. The party has decided not to contest this election and end up splitting the anti-CPI(M) votes in the constituency.

Jayarajan is the strongest leader of the party in the northern district of Kannur. He was CPI(M)’s Kannur district secretary and had stepped down once his candidature was announced.
