The Union Ministry of Environment and Forests has given permission to the KGS Group to proceed further with the steps to obtain environmental clearance for the Aranmula International Airport project. The move is in response to an application submitted by KGS group last week, for which the expert panel of the ministry has given green signal to go forward with steps to obtain environmental clearance. Last year, the Supreme Court and the National Green Tribunal (NGT) had directed that the construction works be stopped, following allegations that the land considered for the project is cultivable, as opposed to KGS group’s claims. The ministry's expert panel has rejected claims that filling of paddy fields wetlands has to be done for the project. Rumors have been doing rounds indicating that the Narendra Modi government is considering the approval of the project. This is in the backdrop of strong opposition from RSS and BJP state elements. However, V Muraleedharan, BJP State president had earlier said that the Modi government will not approve any project without considering the state’s sentiments. The Aranmula International Airport project was initiated during the UPA rule.
