A young woman from Thiruvananthapuram threatened to set herself ablaze as the police attempted to evict her from her residence on Saturday, following a High Court order.

30-year-old Shamna Shafi, a resident of Ayiroopara in Thiruvananthapuram district, has been living in a partially constructed house built by her husband Shafi, for the last five years. She stays there with her elderly parents and six-year-old son.

Shamna alleges that five years ago, Shafi had secretly entered into an alliance with another woman while still being married to her. Shamna was Shafi's second wife as his first marriage ended in a divorce.

Shamna, who had then been living with her in-laws, alleges that she was subjected to torture and harassement from the family. Her husband had also allegedly sold Shamna's jewellery in order to build the new house next door - where she currently stays.

According to media reports, when news about the marriage broke, the issue went to the family court in Thiruvananthapuram where Shafi was granted a divorce on the condition that Shamna was offered a monthly compensation of Rs 8000. The court order also reportedly allowed Shamna to move into the newly constructed house and reside there.

Shafi registers new house in his mother's name

The partially constructed building located next to the in-laws' house was initially registered in Shafi's name. However, soon after his third marriage, Shafi allegedly re-registered the house in his mother's name.

The family then reportedly moved the Kerala High Court alleging that Shamna had illegally occupied the house and was refusing to move out.

The High Court order demanded the eviction of the residents, following which the police visited the house multiple times in order to ask the family to move out, claims the 30-year-old.

According to reports, the family (Shamna, child and parents) is living in a dire condition. As the house is partially constructed, they do not have toilets or a water connection, and are forced to step outside in order to relieve themselves.

A verbal agreement was reportedly made that Shamna would move out of the house if a compensation of Rs 13 lakh was paid by Shafi and his family. However, she alleges that this agreement was not honoured by them.

The police had requested the court for more time to execute the eviction order, reports state. However, the court declined the request.
