A woman has been arrested for burying her newborn after she delivered inside a toilet in Adoor of Pathanamthitta district in Kerala.

The incident came to light when a few of the neighbours found an infant’s body being pawed by stray dogs beneath a coconut tree.

Asha, 36, who delivered a baby boy on March 18 was taken into custody by police last Saturday and was remanded in judicial custody on Tuesday.

“As per her statement, she did not know that she was pregnant until she delivered the baby on 18th. She said that when she went to the toilet, the baby came out unknowingly and assuming the infant to be dead, she buried it without informing anyone,” Adoor police Sub Inspector R Manoj Kumar told The News Minute.

The officer said that as per the doctor’s opinion, the infant was not dead at the time of delivery and it might have died after it was buried.

According to police, Asha claimed that she buried the baby because nobody knew she was pregnant and moreover, she was embarrassed to tell anyone about her sudden delivery. In the medical tests, it was proved that Asha had delivered, but the infant’s post-mortem report could not prove when the baby died, as the body had decayed.

“We will conduct a DNA test though she claims that the baby was her husband’s. Her husband was in Dubai and had come home for a few days some months ago. What she says may be true but we doubt how someone could not know about her own pregnancy,” the officer added.

Asha, who lives in her husband’s house, has two school-going children.
