For ages, Kerala has been a paradise for tourists with its stunning locales, be it the beaches, the hills, the backwaters or its jungles. And, the Kerala Tourism Department has left no stone unturned to inform the people that the tourism sector in God’s Own Country is still intact despite the setback it faced due to the devastating floods in August last year, coupled with the outbreak of the Nipah virus and the political unrests in the state.

In its latest move to promote the destination, Kerala tourism opened an account in the popular short-form mobile videos platform, TikTok, as part of the app’s global campaign called #TikTokTravel. With this, the Kerala Tourism Department becomes the first in India to join TikTok.

TikTok’s campaign in India, which is known as #YehMeraIndia, is an attempt to showcase the country as a top travel destination, by encouraging the users to share their travel moments in India using the hashtag.

It’s not a surprise that hashtags of various places in Kerala have managed to attract a huge number of views, given the popularity of the app in the state. Some of the top viewed travel destinations of Kerala in the app are Palakkad (3.55 crore views), Wayanad (3.29 crore views), Munnar (3.28 crore views), Kovalam (29 lakh views) and Thekkady (13 lakh views).

The other popular travel destinations in India that are featured in the popular platform include the Taj Mahal (7.92 crore views), the GoldenTemple (6.76 crore views), the Himalaya (2.26 crore views), the RedFort (1.36 crore views) and the Gateway of India (90 lakh views).

The platform, which has already grabbed attention with some creative content in the form of lip-syncing popular songs and movie dialogues, has now become increasingly popular in sharing authentic travel moments as well. As per a report, over 4,00,000 videos with over 1.7 billion views have been shared under the hashtag ‘travel’ on TikTok. From posting moments where the users can be seen interacting with nature in different ways to trying out the local cuisine and street food, users have been posting their travel moments on the app.

The Kerala Tourism Director, P Bala Kiran IAS, in a statement, said that the tourism department is thrilled to be one of the first state tourism boards to come onto TikTok and be part of #TikTokTravel and #YehMeraIndia campaigns. “We believe this platform will help us in promoting the state as an attractive tourist destination in the country and it is encouraging to know that some of the Kerala hashtags have managed to garner a huge number of views on TikTok. There couldn’t have been a better time for us to kick-start our TikTok journey,” he said.

The tourism director stated that TikTok’s global reach will help the tourism department to showcase Kerala’s myriad offerings to the world and added that he would like to see the people come to Kerala and experience the destinations firsthand after viewing them through the platform.

By stating that they are thrilled to roll out the travel campaign in India, Sachin Sharma, the Director of Sales and Partnerships of TiTok India, said that they aim to bring to life the beautiful landscape, colourful culture and unforgettable experiences and moments that the country has to offer to travellers. “We hope it will encourage more people to pack their bags and explore this wonderful country, not only to know it better but also to broaden their own mental horizons,” he added.
