A toddler, who allegedly strayed out of a day care centre in Ernakulam, drowned to death in the Periyar river on Wednesday.

Two-and-a-half-year-old Adhav (Ambadi) allegedly went out of the centre attached to St Mary’s School in Eloor at around 2.30pm and drowned in a canal some 100 meters away from the centre.

According to reports, the front gate of the centre was left ajar following a visit by some guests. It was not before 50 minutes had passed that the authorities at the centre noticed the child’s absence.

The Times of India reports that the police have filed a case under Section 304 A against the day care authorities for causing death by negligence, following a complaint by the child’s parents.

“We have received a complaint from his parents, Rajesh and Resmi. There is a chance of negligence by the centre but this can be confirmed only after investigation,“ Eloor sub inspector Prem Lal was quoted as saying.
