Kerala teacher who sexually abused boy with autism arrested in Thiruvananthapuram

Speaking to TNM, an official from the Sreekaryam police station stated that the accused Santhosh has confessed to the crime during the initial round of questioning.

A government school teacher in Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram, who has been accused of sexually abusing a 10-year-old boy with autism, was arrested on Monday from the state capital. 50-year-old Santhosh Kumar was nabbed by the Sreekaryam police around 5:30 pm near the premises of Thiruvananthapuram Medical College.

It was during the last week of July that the 10-year-old boy revealed to his speech therapist and his mother that he was being sexually abused and assaulted by his Maths teacher, Santhosh. Following this, the boy’s mother had filed a complaint with the Sreekaryam police, who booked a case against the teacher under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

Speaking to TNM, an official from the Sreekaryam police station stated that the accused Santhosh has confessed to the crime during the initial round of questioning. “He has admitted to sexually abusing the boy once but we have to investigate more into all of this,” said the police official.

The accused teacher was reportedly helping the boy with extra classes and was accused of harassing him for a period of several weeks. He also allegedly threatened the boy that he would kill his mother if he revealed what had happened to him. The student also confided in his mother and the therapist, with the help of pictures, how he was abused. He said that during one instance, the teacher had hit him with a stick, pushed him into a bathroom and stamped him. The mother remembers her son coming back with muddied pants that day.

According to a report by News 18 Malayalam, despite the Sreekaryam police booking a POCSO case against the teacher, the case had hit a dead end and nothing was happening. Following this, the mother had given a complaint to the Director General of Police (DGP).

The police were reported to have claimed that there were contradictions in the boy’s statements and were not willing to file a case initially. However, the parents of the boy had proceeded to submit a complaint to the Kerala Chief Minister, following which the teacher was arrested on Monday.
