In a move to restore the image of Kerala police which was tarnished with various allegations of custodial deaths, state police chief Loknath Behera has issued a direction stating that those police officers with offensive language and bad behaviour should be kept away from duties that require interaction with the public.

The direction given to senior police officers and district police chiefs says that it should be ensured that this directive is complied with without fail.

“If a complaint comes up about bad behaviour of a police officer, it is the responsibility of the officer to prove that it is wrong. Improving the relationship with the public is the only way to restore the image of the police. Officers should not use even one inappropriate word,” the DGP is reported to have stated, as per a report by Manorama News.

He is also reported to have said that police officers should contemplate on what they have been doing till date and should correct themselves if needed. Police were also directed to hold weekly meetings in all police units to discuss public opinion and news in media about the force.

The Kerala Police have also started initiatives to address the stress-related issues of the officers. Arrangements have been made to provide counselling to those officers under stress at the Help and Assistance to Tackle Stress (HATS) centre in Thiruvananthapuram.

Loknath Behera has also directed that the time taken for counselling by police officers should be considered as part of official duty and that they also should be given required travel allowances. Similar centres like HATS will soon be opened in every district, the police chief stated.

He also said that regular annual health check-ups will be conducted for police personnel from now on. It is also suggested that ‘buddy system’, where two police officers will be given the same duty together, should be implemented as far as possible, so that it might create a sense of co-existence among police officers and thereby reduce stress.
