The News Minute| September 10, 2014| 10.40 am IST A rumour is doing rounds in Kerala that the Communist Party of India (Marxist) is conducting a survey that focuses on the caste of the people, for instance to gather information about inter-caste marriages. The News Minute spoke to T. M. Thomas Isaac, MLA and central committee member of the CPI(M). “Nonsense,” he said sternly when asked if the party was doing such a caste-based census in the state. He said that it was true that the party is conducting a survey and also said that surveys are conducted by every political parties before elections. He said that the major change in this survey was that it will be incorporating the socio-economic status of every household. Until now only political affiliation was asked in their surveys. This time, he said that more basic questions like age, occupation, etc. would be recorded. He also said that by this survey the party aims to make a permanent register that would be maintained in every ward level office of the party. He also said that such an exercise would help them to understand why the party fared poorly in the general elections, and can make required amends.
