The News Minute| October 15, 2014| 7.00 pm IST We all know that Kerala and hartals are sort of synonymous! Reasserting the fact that many Keralites love to protest, some young people in the state are organising a “digital hartal”. Netizens from Kerala are reportedly organizing an “internet hartal” on the 31st of October against the unfair pricing of data plans offered by various carriers like Vodafone, Airtel etc. Reports that have appeared in Kerala say that the protest is against the recent price hikes which has affected the frequent users of Whatsapp and Facebook. Reports say that messages are being shared widely in platforms like Whatsapp and Facebook encouraging people to not use any internet services on October 31st. The advocates of “digital hartal” are urging people across the country to stand against the recent move by Airtel, Vodafone and Idea (AvoID) groups to hike data prices and reduce validity of different packs. In social media platforms Keralites are making this a celebration, with some even comparing it to the “Bread Strike” of 1978 which took place in England.
