Director Lokesh Kanagaraj made a splash with Maanagaram, a thriller set in Chennai, which released in 2017. The film won over audiences and critics alike. With glowing reviews and highly positive word-of-mouth, the film managed to succeed at the box-office.
Even before the film could complete its theatrical run, Lokesh was committed to doing another film for Dream Warrior Pictures, the makers of Maanagaram, and it was believed that he will team up with Karthi for this one. A year after this report made the headlines, the project was officially launched in December 2018 and it is said to be an action thriller.
The film’s regular shooting began in Tenkasi in January 2019 and more than 50 percent of the project has already been shot. Meanwhile, reports have emerged that the film has been titled Khaidi and that the makers are looking for an auspicious occasion to officially unveil the title along with the film’s first look.
In an interview earlier, Lokesh revealed that that the film doesn’t feature a heroine. “Karthi does have a romantic interest in this film, but this character will not be on screen. However, audiences will not feel the absence of the heroine. It is an out-and-out action thriller, and will be intense and emotional.”
He also went on to add that 70 percent of the film will be shot in and around Chennai and Tirunelveli. The project also stars Narain, Dheena and George Mariyan in important roles. Sam CS has been roped in to compose music.
Following the debacle of Dev, which released amid high hype, Karthi has shifted all his focus on this project with Lokesh. The industry grapevine is that the film’s story will unfold in a span of 48 hours and will follow a khaidi (convict) on the run.
