In a reprieve for Union Minister Sadananda Gowda’s son Karthik, the Karnataka High Court quashed on Friday the charge sheet filed against him for cheating a woman on the pretext of marriage.

The High Court observed that the allegations made by the complainant were contradictory in nature.

In a complaint lodged at the RT Nagar police station in Bengaluru in 2014, an actor, Mythreyi Gowda had accused Karthik of raping and cheating her on the pretext of marriage.

The complaint was filed under sections 376 (rape), 366 (kidnapping) and 420 (cheating) of the IPC. Mythreyi filed the complaint on the day Karthik was getting engaged to another woman.

Speaking to the media in August, Mythreyi had claimed that he had married her by tying a mangalsutra when they met in Mangaluru.

In January 2015, the HC initially rejected Karthik’s plea to quash the FIR against him.

In September 2015, the RT Nagar police filed a charge sheet before the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate court against Karthik on charges of cheating, but dropped the rape charge based on forensic lab reports.
