A Congress councillor from Belagavi was arrested on Wednesday evening for allegedly kidnapping a college girl and keeping her hostage.

The Times of India reported that councillor of Ward 52 Dinesh Mallikarjun Nashipudi, who is also an Ayurvedic doctor, was arrested on Wednesday night for allegedly abducting a teenage girl and keeping her hostage for over 10 days.

According to the complaint filed by the girl’s mother, the councillor kidnapped her daughter, who studies at GIT Engineering college, on February 17. He allegedly demanded a ransom of Rs 10 lakh. However, the girl escaped on February 27. She registered a complaint with social worker Akhila Pathan.

A case has been registered against the councillor for kidnapping and assaulting with intent to outrage a woman’s modesty. The 2nd JMFC Court remanded him to 14 days judicial custody.

Sub-inspector Jyotirling Honakatti said that the girl told police that the girl was picked up by 38-year-old Nashipudi. He allegedly took her to his residence and locked her up. Only the accused's mother was in the residence and his pregnant wife had gone to her mother's house, reported TOI.

Police feel that the reason behind the abduction could be a financial transaction between the accused and the girl's mother who is a First Division Clerk in the irrigation department.

The girl’s mother got the job at the department after the girl's father, who was a joint engineer in the irrigation department, passed away.

TOI reported that the police refused to accept the complaint, but were forced to do so after reports went viral on social media.
