Actor and Makkal Needhi Maiam chief Kamal Haasan on Wednesday offered his condolences and gave Rs 10 lakh to the family of Usha, who died after a traffic cop allegedly kicked the bike she was travelling on in a fit of anger.

Kamal had earlier announced that he would be giving the amount on March 8, during the party’s public meeting.

The actor-turned-politician is in Tiruchi on Wednesday and is set to hold a public meeting that will highlight the Cauvery water issue.

On March 7, 34-year-old Usha and her husband Raja were travelling on a bike on the Thanjavur-Tiruchy highway when a policeman stopped the couple because Raja was not wearing a helmet.

Following a conversation with the policeman, Raja decided to go on his way, thinking that the matter had ended. The policeman, however, chased after the couple, and allegedly kicked their bike repeatedly till they fell.

The couple was taken to the government hospital in Thuvakudi where Usha was declared dead. She breathed her last near the Ganesha roundabout opposite the BHEL headquarters. Raja, however, sustained minor injuries.

The couple was travelling to a friend’s wedding, and was carrying a wet grinder, which they bought for the friend as a present when the incident took place.

“We have to get justice. This should not happen to anybody else. Why did he need to kick? My life is gone now… WiIl he return my life? I will not let this go,” Raja earlier told the media.

Usha’s death sent shockwaves across Tamil Nadu. Protests were also held outside the mortuary where her body was kept.

At the time, over 3000 people reportedly gathered at the highway and agitated over the death. Despite the police informing them of the policeman’s arrest, they refused to disperse. Angry protesters then began flinging stones at the police, who retaliated with a lathi charge forcing agitators to disperse temporarily.
