ASCI said that the ad was 'misleading by exaggeration

The Advertising Standard Council of India placed Kalyan Jewellers under the scanner for broadcasing misleading and unsubstantiated advertisements.           

According to the press release, ASCI said that Kalyan Jewellers make the claim that they are the “biggest jewellery showroom in the world,” which is unsubstantiated with comparative data. ASCI also upheld that the ad is “misleading by exaggeration.”

According to a report in the Business Standard from May last year, the showroom in question appears to be one in Chennai, which TS Kalyanaraman, the chairman and MD of the company, maintains is the largest in the world.

Various ads before the opening of the store had made similar claims. This one features Amitabh Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Manju Warrier, Nagarjuna, Shiva Rajkumar, Prabhu and Vikram Prabhu.

Apart from Kalyan Jewellers, companies like ITC, Johnson & Johnson, Patanjali and HUL were also pulled up by ASCI for misleading advertisements.
