Justice John Michael D’Cunha, the special court judge who convicted J Jayalalithaa in September 2014 has been made the Registrar General of the Karnataka High Court. Interestingly, the notice regarding the posting was notified just few hours after the Karnataka government announced that it would appeal in Supreme Court against the Karnataka High Court order’s which acquitted Tamil Nadu CM Jayalalithaa.Justice Cunha was the presiding judge in the Bangalore special court which had pronounced Jayalalithaa guilty in the 66.65 crore disproportionate assets case last year and had sentenced her to four years in prison. Following this, AIADMK supporters had protested by putting up posters and banners criticizing the judge and the verdict. The Vellore municipal council had even passed a resolution against the judge and his order. The council was forced to publicly apologise to the judge, following an order by the Madras High Court.A Firstpost report says that Cunha, hailing from Mangalore, had started practise as a lawyer in 1985 and was selected to the post of district judge in 2002. He served in Dharward, Bellary and Bangalore in various positions, including as Secretary to the Chief Justices and as Registrar (Vigilance) of the High Court prior to his present posting.
