A day after the death of JNU scholar J Muthukrishanan, his father and their relatives reached AIIMS on Tuesday and refused to accept the body asking for a proper investigation into his death.

Jeevanatham, Muthukrishanan’s father told The Times of India that his son could not have committed suicide. He said that he had spoken to him a few days ago and he had promised to visit them. The father suspects foul play and wants an independent committee to investigate the case.

Muthukrishanan’s father wants the post-mortem to be conducted by three doctors in which two are of his choice. He also wants the process to be videotaped and the report to be sent to the CBI. However, his demands were not accepted by the police and AIIMS.

Reportedly, Muthukrishanan had left the hostel around 7:30am. He had breakfast with his friends in a dhaba and was singing along with them. Later, he went to play Holi and was seen talking to someone on the phone for a long time.

The Delhi police have been investigating the case. As no suicide note was found, they are checking his Facebook posts, mobile phone and call records. He was talking to a woman friend around 11:30am and then a friend from HCU. Both the calls lasted for around 12 to 20 minutes.

However, his roommates told police that he had been worried for the past few days about submitting a thesis on modern history. Sources told ToI that he was not proficient in English and was not able to complete his assignment.

The Times of India reported that he reached his friend Goman Kim’s house around 1:30pm. As he looked tired, his friend asked him to take rest while his wife was preparing lunch. Muthu then went inside the room and locked the door. They called him around 2:30pm for lunch but he did not respond. They all had lunch and were busy watching a movie. Around 4:30pm, Kim went and checked again. Then, he pushed the door open and found Muthukrishanan hanging from the ceiling fan.

They immediately informed Vasant Vihar police and they reached the house. Muthukrishanan allegedly hanged himself using a quilt. He was rushed to AIIMS and was declared dead on arrival.
