What is it all about? Where is it happening?

This is Tamil Nadu’s first investment summit. Jayalalithaa wants to attract private investments into the state of Tamil Nadu. The GIS is meant to woo global and Indian investors to pump in more money into the state to create jobs, increase production and boost the economy. This is also being seen as a political move to present the regime as a business-friendly one ahead of the 2016 Assembly polls. It will happen at the Chennai Trade Centre in Nandambakkam and will go on for two days. Nearly 400 stalls have been made.

Who is attending?

About 5000 business delegates are set to attend, with more than 1000 coming from 9 other countries. The state’s own businessmen like KM Mammen and Gopal Srinivasan will pitch for investments. Corporate tycoons like Anil Ambani, Anand Mahindra, Gautam Adani, YC Deveshwar, Shiv Nadar and Sajjan Jindal are expected to attend.

Apart from them, Union Ministers Nirmala Seetharaman and Pon Radhakrishnan are expected to attend.

Which are the sectors in focus?

Several sectors are being focussed by the government, the major ones being energy, bio-technology, pharmaceuticals, textiles, aerospace and IT/ITES.

How much money is being spent on this by the TN government?

Rs. 100 crore

How much investment is expected to be generated?

Rs. 1 lakh crore to Rs. 2 lakh crore, according to varying estimates. More than 100 MoUs are expected to be signed. TNIE reports that Rs. 1.1 lakh crore worth on energy-sector investments alone are expected to be generated.

Other arrangements

Special police control room, special team at the airport, live streaming of the event, social media outreach and no leave for police and city corporation staff. Holograms and laser shows also arranged.
