The 2010 Malayalam film Pokkiri Raja, which had Mammootty and Prithviraj in the lead roles, was a big hit. Recently, there have been reports of plans of a sequel. While Mammootty will be essaying the lead role, reports indicate that Prithviraj may not be a part of the film.

Sources in the know say that his dates are full with other assignments following which he had to reject the Pokkiri Raja sequel. And guess who the makers are in talks with to replace him? We hear that Tamil actor Jai may be brought onboard. If this happens, it will be his Mollywood debut.

Pokkiri Raja, a comic caper, was directed by Vysakh and produced by Tomichan Mulakupadam under his banner Mulakupadam Films. Made on a budget of Rs 7.80 crore, Pokkiri Raja went on to collect Rs 13 crore at the box office. The film, which starred Shriya Saran as the woman lead, also had Salim Kumar, Nedumudi Venu, Vijayaraghavan, Siddique, Riyaz Khan and Suraj Venjaramoodu in the star cast.

Pokkiri Raja marked the directorial debut of Vyasakh and it turned out to be a massive hit in his career. He then went on to direct films such as Mallu Singh, Seniors, Cousins, Pulimurugan and Masterpiece.

While discussions are on to get the sequel on the floors, Mammootty is busy with the YSR biopic Yatra. He joined the sets of this film recently and will be continuing to shoot for it for the next few weeks. The shooting is currently happening in Telangana and the star is camping there. The biopic is being directed by Mahi V Raghav and Mammootty plays the late chief minister of Andhra Pradesh YS Rajasekar Reddy. The biopic is expected to be out in theatres early next year.

Besides these films, the star also has Peranbu, Mamaankam and Oru Kuttanadan Blog needing his attention. With the announcement that the sequel to Pokkiri Raja is underway, Mammootty’s fans are excited to see it hit the marquee next year.
