The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) will declare its candidate for the Malappuram Lok Sabha bye-elections represented by late MP E Ahamed on Wednesday.

Speculation is rife that that the IUML may reconsider fielding Vengara MLA PK Kunhalikutty as the candidate. This follows a meeting of senior leaders in the IUML and its ally the Congress in Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday. Congress had reportedly requested IUML to rethink fielding Kunhalikutty in the upcoming bye-poll. The Malappuram parliamentary seat fell vacant following the death of Former Union Minister E Ahamed on February 1. He was one of the longest serving parliamentarians from Kerala, having been an MP seven times for 26 years.

Malappuram goes to polls on April 12. Kunhalikutty, whose hometown is Malappuram, was elected as the national general secretary in the party’s national executive meet held in Chennai on February 26.  His experience, party leaders believe make him a suitable choice to replace Ahmed. Given his clout in the party, the IUML has neither rejected nor confirmed the reports about his candidature.

Meanwhile, E Ahamed’s daughter Dr Fouzia Shershad on Tuesday said that she is willing to contest from Malappuram.  When her name was doing the rounds earlier, Dr Fouzia had stated that she was yet to make up her mind. "A lot of people from Malappuram are requesting me to make my foray into politics. But I haven't made my mind." she had told TNM earlier.
