While talking to reporters on Wednesday, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said that Kerala will ask Prime Minister Modi to intervene in the Italian marine case to bring Massimiliano Latorre –one of the Italian marines accused of killing Indian fishermen- back to India.

Chandy’s statement comes a day after Senator Nicola Latorre –Head of Italian Senate’s defence committee- said that Latorre will not return to India. The Supreme Court had allowed Latorre to go to Italy in September 2014 after suffering a brain stroke.

His initial stay of four months was subsequently extended for treatment purposes.

Italy has also sought the return of Salvatore Girone –the other accused- who is still in India.

The two marines who were on board the Enrica Lexie ship are accused of killing two Indian fishermen off the Kerala coast on February 15, 2012 after they mistook the latter for pirates.
