As the IPL fever comes to a close with finals just around the corner, online food delivery platforms such as Swiggy said that food orders shot up by 30% during match timings compared to non-cricket days. And with the final match between Mumbai and Chennai set to happen on Sunday, Swiggy predicts a record-breaking number of orders, especially for chicken biryani being the most ordered dish.

In terms of cities, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Delhi ordered the most during the IPL season.

As is the growing trend, smaller towns scored big with cities like Kanyakumari, Rewa, Nizamabad, Kadapa, Vapi and Pilani seeing a 117-fold increase in orders compared to the pre-cricket season.

Smaller cities not only ordered more often but also spent more. Cities such as Ooty, Shillong, North Goa and Shimla left many of the metros behind in making high value orders. Guntur and Vijayawada ordered more wings this IPL than Lucknow and Chandigarh.

In terms of the food ordered, it turned out that Chennai ordered the most amount of Chicken Biryani and French fries, while Bengaluru batted for masala dosa and chicken wings

Swiggy also ran an IPL offer called Swiggy6, where users could get a discount every time there was a six. Swiggy says that Hyderabad, Bangalore and Delhi placed the maximum orders every time there was a sixer.

The most ordered dishes under this offer were chicken biryani, paneer butter masala, chicken fried rice, kadai paneer, masala dosa, veg biryani and tadoori chicken.

April 10, however, saw themost number of sixes and the most number of orders place using Swiggy6.

“In just 6 weeks, IPL foodies saved around Rs 100 million by placing an order 6 minutes after a six was hit,” Swiggy said in a statement.

The above findings have been derived from Swiggy’s order analysis from March 23, 2019 to May 6, 2019 for over 140+ cities including metros and tier 2&3 cities.
