The News Minute | April 3, 2015 | 11:42 a.m. IST The Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Union Government are reportedly exploring the possibility of bidding for the 2024 Olympics to come to India. According to a report in The Times of India , Modi is scheduled to meet with Thomas Bach, the President of the International Olympic Committee, when the latter touches down in India on April 27. Bach was also reportedly quoted by sections of the media saying that the IOC could not ignore a country of 1.2 billion people while also saying that the fact that another Asian city (Tokyo) hosting the 2020 version of the event didn’t matter so much.  “The PM is open to the idea of bidding for the Games. He indicated that if we launch a bid, it has to be serious” says a government source to the newspaper. The source also reportedly added that the PM did not want the event to end up like the Commonwealth Games and has asked for all the financial implications and other details to be looked into. India has until September 15 to submit an official bid for the games and Rome, Boston and Hamburg are in the hunt with bids expected to come from Nairobi (Kenya), Casablanca (Morocco), Doha (Qatar), Paris (France) and St Petersburg (Russia) amongst other potential bidders.  “The IOC believes that Olympics in India would be a game-changer for the country. It will help in developing sports and channel the energies of youth”, Bach was quoted by sources as saying. The host city for the event will be announced on September 15 in Lima, Peru.  Read more at: India may bid for 2024 Olympics The News Minute | April 3, 2015 | 11:42 a.m. IST The Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Union Government are reportedly exploring the possibility of bidding for the 2024 Olympics to come to India.
