If you are irked about having to buy a coffee or a bottle of water at a restaurant just so you can use the toilet, you don’t have to do so anymore.

The Karnataka Restaurant Owners’ Association has voluntarily decided to allow all citizens in the state to be able to use washrooms at restaurants for free.

According to PC Rao, President of the Association, “Many a time people do not find public toilets and hotels are the only ones which have washrooms available. It is not just hotels, but pubs and bars will also allow citizens to use their washrooms for free, starting Wednesday.”

The move comes two days after hotels and restaurants in South Delhi allowed women and children to use washrooms of hotels and restaurants.

Rao, however, said that this decision by the Karnataka Restaurant Owners’ Association was taken almost a decade ago, but most restaurants did not follow it.

“Restaurants always have toilets. We have come to know that in high-end coffee shops and restaurants, people are not allowed to use the washrooms for free. Hence, we decided to make it mandatory now. Sometimes, people have to buy something from the hotel or bistro in order to use the toilet, but it will not be so anymore,” he added.

However, unlike their counterparts in South Delhi, Rao said the free washroom service was for all citizens across Karnataka.

Bengaluru Mayor G Padmavathi said that she held talks with the Bengaluru Restaurant Owners’ Association in order to implement this rule in the city.

“It is difficult for women especially, and after the New Delhi order stating that restaurants must allow citizens to use the washroom for free, we decided to implement it here as well,” she said.

The order was passed at the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) council meeting held on Wednesday.
