MV Nikesh Kumar, journalist and editor of news channel Reporter TV has been announced as the CPI-M candidate from Azhikode. While there has been a lot of debate on whether it was ethical for journalists to conetst elections, Nikesh Kumar told the media that his conscience told him that was the time to enter poltiics. “I have left journalism to enter politics. My conscience told me to enter politics.”

in a Facebook post published on Wednesday spelt out the reasons for his shift from journalism to politics and for his Left-backed candidature.

This is a summary of the post.

He has confirmed that he is contesting from Azheekode constituency, Kannur district as LDF-backed independent candidate.

"Politics is in my blood. My father M V Raghavan was a prominent leader of second generation of Kerala communist movement. I chose journalism as my career when my father left the party because of a rift. After working in Asianet for a small period, I have been the editorial head of Indiavision and Reporter for the last 15 years.

Journalism was a part of my political activism. This was the time in Kerala, when the culture of TV news was taking shape. During this time, I and my colleagues were trying to bring justice to society and to bring transparency in politics.

Now is a turning point. This is a chance for me to shift from journalism to politics. This was a continuation of the political stand I had till now. This election has come at a point when our politics is at a historical juncture. Intentional attempts have been made to bring inequality and intolerance in our society. Intentional attempts are being made to change the multiple voices and secular nation into a narrow-minded and communal country. I believe that this can be stopped only through Left political ideology. This is the explanation for my Left-backed candidature.

Azhikode is my birthplace. I am emotionally attached to my land. So I am going back to my native place. This post is to share the happiness of my homecoming with my friends".
