Personnel of the Bowenpally police station in Hyderabad allegedly thrashed nine youth on Wednesday night, including a minor, as the group was part of a birthday celebration and created a nuisance. Following this, the policemen allegedly took them to the police station and beat them. As the youth approached the media and showed their injuries, Hyderabad police commissioner Anjani Kumar has ordered a departmental probe to be overseen by the North Zone DCP.

The youth said that they were celebrating their friend's birthday when the police swooped down on them.

One of the victims, Sandeep Kumar, a law student in Bowenpally, told reporters “The policemen said we were creating a nuisance by taking part in the celebrations and took nine of us with them in jeeps to the police station. Before even listening to us, they started beating us with lathis and boots. We are neither involved in any case nor did we do anything wrong. I cannot even show the injuries to my parents. We were beaten badly. I wish the senior officials get to know about this brutal incident and take necessary action.”

Meanwhile, Ram Reddy, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Begumpet, denied the charges, telling a media outlet, “The Bowenpally police received a complaint on Dial 100 that a group of persons were creating nuisance at Tadban on Wednesday afternoon. The police went to the spot and brought them to the station. After counselling them in the presence of their elders, they were released. Petty cases were registered against them for causing public nuisance.”

North Zone DCP Kalmeshwar Shingenavar has begun investigating the incident and is expected to submit a report to the Commissioner soon.

In December last year, a shocking video had surfaced, that showed a police officer brutally thrashing a man, who was in custody. The video showed a police officer, identified as Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police of Madhapur, Gangireddy, kicking, slapping and abusing an accused in a case.
