The Hyderabad police on Friday said that they had nabbed the accused who had tried to kidnap a child from the Secunderabad railway station, earlier this week. The accused had picked up a two-and-half-year old child when she was sleeping next to her parents at the station, and abandoned her near Bandimet, as the child began to cry inconsolably.

The accused was identified as 30-year-old Raju, a labourer, and a native of Mahbubnagar in Telangana.

Police said that they had received a complaint from one Suresh on October 14, who approached the railway police stating that he was sleeping on the platform with his two children, and got up at around 1:30 am, to find his daughter missing.

The police said that Raju had worked in the catering business and had spent a few years at Bengaluru, Tirupati, Chennai and Vijayawada. He had moved to Hyderabad in September this year, and had been working as a labourer.

"The accused planed to kidnap the child for begging with her or sell to needy persons at Tirupati, as the children get huge amount through begging there," the police said in a press note.

"The accused observed the surroundings and confirmed that no one was observing him. Then the accused lifted the child on his shoulders and came out from the railway station. After sometime, the kidnapper reached near Bandimet, and as the child was crying loudly due to fear, he abandoned her on the road near Market Police Station and sped away," the police added.

Passers-by who saw the crying child dialled 100, and she was rescued by the patrolling team of Market Police Station and returned to her father.

Following this, the police went through CCTV footage and tracked the accused.  Two teams were formed, and the accused was arrested.

A case has been registered under Section 363 (Punishment for kidnapping) of the IPC and further investigation is underway.
