While the Telangana police may have cracked the double suicide case of a beautician in Hyderabad, and a Sub-Inspector in Kuknoorpally, the cops are still putting together crucial pieces of evidence.
Vijaya Lakshmi alias Sirisha, had committed suicide in Hyderabad in the early hours of Tuesday, while SI Prabhakar Reddy shot himself with his service revolver, later that same day.
Sirisha hung herself at her work place, a photo studio in the city's Sheikhpet area. The two main accused in the case are Rajeev Kumar, the owner of the studio, and B Sravan.
Addressing the media earlier, Hyderabad Police Commissioner Mahender Reddy told reporters that they had established that Sirisha, along with Rajeev and Sravan, had gone to meet the Kuknoorpally SI at his police quarters to 'settle' a personal dispute.
After all four of them were inebriated, it was here that the SI allegedly tried to sexually assault Sirisha, which the police suspect, led her to take the extreme step.
While the police have matched phone call records, and pinned down the time and location of the cell phones to the police quarter, they are also keen on extracting CCTV footage from cameras installed at the premises of the police station.
However, according to reports, the Kuknoorpally police claimed that the video could not be retrieved due to 'technical issues'.
The New Indian Express reported that technical experts from Siddipet town were also sent to the police station and could not retrieve the data, citing the same ‘technical glitch’.
But the team retrieved the hard disk, and brought it to Hyderabad.
The TNIE report adds that this delay raised eyebrows, as the family of Prabhakar Reddy had alleged that he killed himself due to pressure from his superiors.
Meanwhile, high drama prevailed at Hyderabad's Osmania General Hospital (OGH) as Rajeev and Shravan were brought for a medical exam, before they were produced in court.
Media person along with camera crews chased the accused, as the police rushed them down the narrow corridors of the hospital and out to the escort vehicle waiting outside.
When asked about Sirisha's death, Sravan declared, "I have nothing to do with her death."
When asked about his relationship with the Kuknoorpally SI, he told the media that they were acquaintances for a few years.
The duo were later sent to judicial custody for 14 days.
Hailing from West Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh, Sirisha was married to Satish Chandra and the couple have a 12-year-old daughter.
It was on a complaint by Satish Chandra, who suspected foul play in his wife's death, that the police took up the investigation.
According to the police, Sirisha had come in contact with Rajeev around four years ago, and the duo were suspected to be having physical relationship.
Meanwhile, Rajeev came in touch with another woman Tejaswi, who wanted to marry the former, but learnt about Sirisha, and picked up a fight in May.
The police had called all three of them to the Banjara Hills Police Station for counselling. They promised to settle the issue amicably.
However, as Tejaswi continued to threaten Sirisha, she Sravan's help, who offered to mediate and resolve the issue with the help of his friend Prabhakar Reddy, police said.
They reached Prabhakar's quarters in Kuknoorpally on the night of June 12, where they consumed liquor, and the SI allegedly tried to make sexual advances at Sirisha.
As Sirisha screamed, Rajeev slapped her. Rajeev and Sravan then brought her back to Hyderabad. She tried to jump out of the running car but Rajeev stopped her from doing so and thrashed her again.
They reached the photo studio in Sheikhpet in the early hours of June 13, where Sirisha went upstairs and hung herself.
The Police Commissioner said the autopsy report confirmed that Sirisha died due to hanging, while they suspect that the SI took the extreme step fearing police investigations and action against him.
