With the hype around foldable smartphones growing each day, Huawei is set to launch the 5G variant of its foldable phone ‘Huawei Mate X’ in the Indian market this year. This is reportedly part of a larger plan of Huawei wanting to familiarise the Indian market with the concept of foldable smartphones. For this, it is looking to tap the offline stores selling mobile phones to showcase its foldable phone.

This would enable the buyers to get a feel of how the foldable phone operates and thought it may not translate into actual sales in numbers, the brand might get some traction among the buyers and Huawei claims that will be incentive enough for the company to introduce the Huawei Mate X in this vast country.

While the product is still in its prototype stage, it terms of the design it might not be very different from the Samsung foldable phone unveiled recently. The fully open display is expected to measure 8 inches. This is a strategy that might see the tablet market slowly shrinking. But still that might be a long way away. Huawei has a prototype in circulation, but several details like the screen resolution of the individual screens, the processor, the cameras to be fitted and their sizes etc. are still grey areas. It is suggested that the phone could be 5G enabled as well.

Coming to the pricing, the indications being given suggest the Huawei Mate X phone could be priced as high as Rs 175,000. It remains to be seen how many people in India would want to spend that kind of money on a mobile phone.

But, as mentioned, Huawei may not be fixing target to its marketing team to sell this smartphone in India. The fact that a brand wants to include such high-end phones too in their mix for the Indian market could be the trigger for other brands to follow.
