The Telangana state government on Thursday directed the state police to provide ‘Z’ category security to pontiff Shankaracharya Swami Swaroopananda Saraswathi during his three-day stay in Hyderabad and other Telangana districts.

The move by the state, comes in the backdrop of a controversial comment made by the pontiff on Shirdi Sai Baba.

Earlier in April, triggering protests among the followers of Shirdi Sai Baba, he said that "the unworthy Sai is being worshipped while the real Gods are ignored. This is happening in Maharashtra and particularly in Shirdi. Hence, Maharashtra is facing drought."

This statement received a lot of criticism from devotees, who called his statements ‘ridiculous’ and staged protests at various places.

As a precautionary measure, the Deputy Secretary, protocol, S Arvinder Singh, directed DGP Anurag Sharma, IG of Intelligence Security Wing (ISW) and the Hyderabad police commissioner to provide ‘Z’ category security and necessary courtesies and facilities to the pontiff inside the airport.

The New Indian Express reported:

The pontiff will arrive here on October 23 from Vijawayada and would participate in a programme to be held in Secunderabad. On October 24, he would proceed to Warangal and on October 26, he will visit Vemulawada and then proceed to Kolkata the same day.
