One of India's oldest English dailies, The Hindu on Saturday launched an edition in the 'Maximum City' Mumbai.

While Sachin Kalbag is the Resident Editor of this edition, Peter Griffin is the Deputy Resident Editor.

In an Editor's Note, Malini Parthasarathy, Editor of the Hindu, wrote that The Hindu has now "fulfilled its historical destiny as India’s National Newspaper" by launching the Mumbai edition.

"As a 137-year-old paper," she wrote, "that was part of the making of India’s independence, The Hindu’s connections with this glorious city ran deep. One of its earliest offices was opened in what was then the capital of the Bombay presidency," she wrote.

She also added that "In this edition, we add two special pages — Mumbai Capital — on the pulsating economic activity in the city. These pages feature snapshots and stories of the emerging local trends, particularly of the new economy, start-ups, new products and technologies."

At a press conference in Mumbai on Friday Parthasarathy had said, "We enter Mumbai with a lot of hope and optimism."

On the launch of Kasturi & Sons Ltd.'s (KSL) flagship publication, N. Ram, Chairman of KSL, said, "It is certainly a very ambitious project. We have goodwill in Mumbai. We are not just aiming at a particular segment. A complete newspaper has to target everybody. We have no particular number in mind. We don’t want to overstate or understate our ambition. I think there is space in Mumbai for all of us. We hope you will welcome us, including those organisations that are competing in this market, because there is place for our kind of journalism."

KSL also publishes the business daily Business Line, the fortnightly Frontline, the sports weekly Sportstar and The Hindu (Tamil) daily.

This is what some had to say about The Hindu's launch in Mumbai.
