Regular readers of The Hindu must have been a tad surprised to find overwhelming similarities between the articles “Mr. Modi’s war on welfare” by G. Sampath and Thursday’s piece titled “From welfare to paternalism” by Congress MP Veerappa Moily. The newspaper has issued a clarification in Friday’s edition, saying that Moily’s article “has been found to have copied verbatim several passages” from Sampath’s piece on May 26.The daily says that when Moily’s reaction was sought, he disclosed that he had used Sampath’s piece for “inputs” and that he should have accredited him.Calling it “unacceptable plagiarism”, the publication says it regrets the publication of the piece and that it had withdrawn it online.  While investigating plagiarism, the newspaper had taken off the online edition of Moily’s piece on Thursday itself. The article, a cache version of which is available here, talks about the cutting down of social spending by the Indian government.Under the sub-heading “Welfare to paternalism”, several paragraphs have been directly lifted from another op-ed article written by G Sampath published on May 26, ironically, in The Hindu itself. This is not the only instance, other sentences too seems to have been lifted. What Sampath wroteWhat Moily wrote:What Sampath wrote:What Moily wrote:
