The city of Chennai woke up to a rainy Sunday morning as predicted by the Regional Meteorological Centre, and according to Pradeep John, who goes by Tamil Nadu weatherman, the winds have changed from South-East to East, resulting in more rains.

“Today morning when we wake up, we will see an active monsoonish day. Winds have changed from South-East to East and the clouds which were struggling to move from sea to land yesterday, there might be some improvement today and we might get some day rains today (sic),” he wrote.

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai recorded 100% humidity on Sunday morning and the temperature stood at 26.2°C. Heavy to very heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over the state for the next two days along with thunderstorm with lightning warnings for some places that may extend up to October 25, according to the RMC.

As of October 19, Devala in Nilgiris district recorded the highest amount of rainfall in the state, measuring up to 13 cms. Sivalogam in Kanyakumari district recorded 12 cms, while Kumarapalayam in Namakkal, Sathyamangalam in Erode, Sankarankoil in Tirunelveli and  Mettupalayam in Coimbatore district recorded 6 cm each. 

According to RMC, Chennai’s Meenambakkam recorded 0.2 mm rainfall on Saturday. Sathyabama University recorded 61 mm, Shollinganallur recorded 33 mm and Tambaram recorded 24 mm rainfall.

The North-East monsoon this month is expected to bring heavy rainfall to Tamil Nadu.

According to the Times of India, a trough, which is likely to intensify over the Bay of Bengal, is expected to bring very heavy rain to the city starting Tuesday. Tamil Nadu Weatherman also wrote that a ‘low’ or ‘trough of low’ on October 22 will see enhanced activity across the state.
