Budget airline GoAir on Friday said it would operate three direct weekly flights between Kannur in Kerala and Muscat from February 28. PTI reports that Muscat is currently the airport's third international destination.

Bookings for the flight are open with immediate effect with a "one-way fare (all inclusive) starting Rs 4,999," the airline said in a statement.

"GoAir that has recently commenced domestic operations out of Kannur is proud to announce Muscat as its third international destination and 27th overall destination. GoAir will operate three direct flight services per week between Kannur-Muscat-Kannur, and bookings are now open at an attractive all-inclusive one way fare starting from Rs 4,999," it said.

Jeh Wadia, Managing Director, GoAir said: "It gives us immense delight to add Muscat as our third international destination. Muscat is a key market for us and is in line with our growth strategy and more so for the Middle East."

The airline recently introduced direct daily connectivity to Phuket from Mumbai, Delhi and Bengaluru. It also operates four direct weekly flights on the Mumbai-Male route, three weekly flights on Delhi-Male and two weekly flights on Bengaluru-Male route.

The new Kannur International Airport, inaugurated on December 9, is the fourth international airport in Kerala, and spreads over 2300 acres of land. The 95,000 sq m terminal building is the eight largest in the country, and the runway is designed to suit Code E aircraft, like the Boeing B-777 and Airbus A-330. With a solar power system, the airport has received a LEED gold rating for energy and environment conservation.  Built at a cost of Rs 2292 crore, the airport is expected to serve more than 1 million passengers a year. This number is expected to increase five-fold by the year 2025.

The airport is expected to be particularly useful to Keralites working in the Middle East, and ease access to tourist destinations like Coorg, Mysore, Kasargod, Wayanad, and of course Kannur. Domestic destinations connected by this airport include Delhi, Chennai, Goa, Bengaluru, Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram and Ghaziabad.
