The strike by students of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) has entered its 28th day, and calls for the resignation of its chairman Gajendra Chauhan are getting louder. Adding weight behind the students protesting against Chauhan’s appointment are several Bollywood actors, some of them former FTII alumni themselves. The appointment of Chauhan is seen as a political one, and the fact that the actor does not have a large body of work behind him has not helped his cause. The most recent actor to call time on Chauhan’s tenure is Rishi Kapoor, whose son Ranbir had expressed solidarity with FTII students himself. Kapoor’s comments on Twitter come a day after Anupam Kher, a former FTII student himself, chided Chauhan on a prime-time debate. Here is what they have had to say: Rishi Kapoor on Twitter: Advice. After all the protests and controversy,Gajendra Chauhan, the FTII Chairman should voluntarily retire. Will do good to the students. — rishi kapoor (@chintskap) July 10, 2015  If they don't want you, they don't want you.By pushing for the chairmanship is getting you no where.Let self pride play a role and retire! — rishi kapoor (@chintskap) July 10, 2015 Oscar winner Resul Pookutty: He said on Twitter that in conversation with Arun Jaitley, the Union minister himself mentioned that as a government “we haven’t made the best of choice”, but “can’t retract”.  Not just @AnupamPkher Mr.@arunjaitley also told us in the meeting that we haven't made the best of choice but as a Govt.we can't retract! — resul pookutty (@resulp) July 10, 2015 “I don't think the present council and its members and its chairman, who is appointed by the government of India, is anything to be aspired for,” Pookutty told NDTV. “I think that it is cheating. A government cannot cheat its people,” he added. Kiran Rao, director of Dhobi Ghat: “I think you can measure the health of a country by the health of its cultural institutions and if you don't treat those with some respect and put leaders in their vision to lead these institutions, your country is in big trouble. So, I think it is very important that government pay heed to these protests,” she was quoted as saying. Saeed Mirza, screenwriter, director and FTII graduate: “You judge a nation, its sanity, its civility through the country's institutions. To me, it is critically important as to who holds these institutions,” he said. Piyush Mishra, actor, singer, lyricist: “The man (to be appointed as FTII President) has to be qualified. What we have to see is if he has necessary vision. It’s not only about experience,” Mishra said. Ranbir Kapoor and Nawazuddin Siddiqui: While the previous generation took to the streets with the students, actors Ranbir Kapoor and Nawazuddin Siddiqui also reached out to the students and expressed their concern over the “political interference” in the affairs of the institute.
