Four people were hit by an electric train and killed in Chennai on Wednesday.

Around 3pm, about 400 metres away from Nugambakkam railway station, four men were walking towards Chetpet railway station along with their bags, when an electric train travelling from Tambaram to the Chennai Beach Station hit them.

Dr Vijayakumar, Superintendent of Railway Police told The News Minute, “Three of the men died on the spot and one was immediately taken to Rajiv Gandhi hospital but was declared dead after reaching there,” he said.

He added that police are in the process of identifying the four men. The preliminary investigation has revealed that one of them is from Koraput district in Odisha and is being verified.

Persons being killed by trains while walking on tracks is a frequent occurrence in Chennai’s rail network. In 2015, for instance, nearly 988 persons were reportedly killed in this manner.
