Rahul Gandhi, the President of the Indian National Congress (INC), may have lost his long-held seat in Amethi to BJP’s Smriti Irani, but he managed to win his Wayanad seat with one of the highest vote margins in South India. The Congress President, from the official twitter handle of the “MP of Wayanad”, on Saturday expressed his gratitude to the party workers as well as to all the voters in Kerala for their support.

Written in Malayalam, Rahul Gandhi said, “I’m forever thankful and indebted to all the party workers and leaders of the United Democratic Front (UDF) for working towards my electoral victory in Wayanad.”

He added, “In order to express my gratitude to the voters and to the party workers for helping me win with a record margin, I will be visiting the constituency soon and we shall interact face to face,” added the Congress President and the new Member of Parliament of Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency  in Kerala.

The tweet comes hours after Rahul Gandhi offered to resign at the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting over the party's poor performance in the General Elections. The CWC, however, did not accept his resignation.

Rahul Gandhi, who polled a total of 7,06,367 votes, defeated CPI’s PP Suneer, who was the LDF Lok Sabha candidate in the Wayanad constituency by a mammoth margin of 4,31,770 votes.

The candidature of Rahul Gandhi from the Wayanad seat had created a lot of buzz in the state and there were talks about the “Rahul wave” that would work in the favour of the UDF. Political analysts still feel that this wave did play a part in ensuring a landslide victory for the UDF in Kerala, where they won 19 out of the 20 Lok Sabha seats. Kerala is also one of the only states in India where the Congress party managed to secure a formidable victory this election. The party won 15 Lok Sabha seats in Kerala, followed by eight seats in Tamil Nadu.
