Five men were arrested by the Vijayawada police on Friday evening on charges of raping a 16-year-old girl. 

The incident came into light on Wednesday, when a case was registered against the accused at the SN Puram Police station in Vijayawada. 

The accused have been identified as Akhil, Srikanth, Abhishek, Pavan and Sunil, all aged between 19 to 21. 

“The victim met Akhil via Facebook almost a year ago, and they started talking to each other and started dating each other. On Tuesday, when they met, he took her to outskirts of the city where both consumed alcohol. At around 7 pm, he dropped her at BRTS Road in Vijayawada,” Sub-inspector Prasad told TNM. 

Seeing her in an inebriated condition, the other four accused, Srikanth, Abhishek, Pavan and Sunil went up to her and extended help to drop her home. 

“Abhishek, one of the accused stays near her home. So she went with them,” the Sub-Inspector added.

They took her to Abhishek’s house and allegedly repeatedly raped her until the next morning. 

“They dropped her home at 7 am. The victim then went to her parents and narrated the whole incident. After which they filed a complaint on Wednesday,” said Prasad. 

Following the incident, the police have registered a case against all five accused for kidnaping and rape. The girl’s male friend was arrested along with the four other accused. 

Last month, a 25-year-old man, Gangisetti Lokesh was arrested by Nunna police in Vijayawada for sexually assaulting a minor girl.

According to the Times of India, Lokesh a resident of Payakapuram area claimed to have fallen in love with a 15-year-old who is his neighbour’s daughter.

On March 24, he forced himself on her and sexually abused her. Later when her father came to know about the incident he filed a case against Lokesh, however, went absconding. 

Last month, Lokesh was caught by Vijayawada police at Pipulla junction. 

According to National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) 2015 data, Andhra Pradesh has recorded total of 2052 rape cases, of which as many as 24 cases were gang rapes.
