The Cyberabad City Police on Saturday invoked the Preventive Detention Act against two teachers from Hyderabad in different cases of sexual assault on minors. Cyberabad City Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar said the actions of the two teachers have “brought shame and humiliation to the entire teaching community”.

The Cyberabad Police initiated the Preventive Detention Act against Sayed Akbar, a government school headmaster, and D Santhosh Kumar, a private school teacher in the city. Under the PD Act, they will be detained for a maximum period up to one year while they face trial. The PD Act has been used by the Telangana police in the past to book child traffickers and brothel operators, however, this is the first time sex offenders have been booked using this act.

Sayed Akbar had allegedly lured a former student who had approached him for help to clear her Inter first year backlogs in May this year, police said. The accused entered into a relationship with the survivor and later kidnapped her and took her to Golconda Fort and married her.

“He kidnapped and took her to Golconda Fort and married her there and continued to assault the minor. This offence was reported to the Shamshabad police station,” said Sajjanar, speaking to media on Saturday.

Sayed later took the survivor to his home at Shadnagar. The police got involved after the survivor managed to escape with her parents’ help. Sayed had been on the run for over three months and was apprehended earlier this month, reported The New Indian Express.

Santhosh Kumar, against whom the PD Act has been invoked in the second case, sexually assaulted a minor by luring the survivor to his relative’s house. He had lured her by gifting her a phone, police said.

“When the parents of the victim noticed their conversations on the phone, the accused took her to his relative’s house and confined her there for 12 days and sexually assaulted her. This offence was reported in the Sanath Nagar police station. He was arrested in August,” the commissioner added.
