The Karnataka government has decided to appeal against the acquittal of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa by the Karnataka High Court in a disproportionate case. A cabinet meeting headed by state Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has taken the decision to go ahead with the appeal. The acquittal by Justice Kumaraswamy of the Karnataka High Court on May 11 had allowed J Jayalalithaa to become Chief Minister of the state again. Karnataka government had been under a lot of pressure lately over its indecision over the appeal. The Karnataka government is the sole prosecutor in the case, but with the government showing reluctance to go for an appeal, DMK had announced last week that they would file a Special Leave Petition in the Supreme Court.Karnataka Law Minister T B Jayachandra said, "The special prosecutor appointed by the direction of the SC has given an opinion to file an appeal against the acquittal order of Jayalalithaa. The law department and all concerned, today we have decided to appeal against the verdict." Reacting to this, DMK leader M K Stalin said, "We demanded that this should be appealed, we continue to do so now."Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee’s Legal Cell had recommended to the Karnataka state government that the state not go ahead with an appeal against the Jayalalithaa DA case. The Karnataka Congress did not want to take any risk with BBMP elections scheduled to be held, there was fear that a decision against Jayalalithaa will anger the Tamil voters in Bengaluru city. The KPCC Legal Cell had also said that the state of Karnataka was not an aggrieved party in the case and was only carrying out the Supreme Court's direction on transfer petition to try the case in Karnataka in an administrative capacity.
