With most exit polls on Sunday predicting a comfortable victory for the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) said that they were not accurate and did not reflect the true picture. The TRS, which is trying to bring together the regional parties under the Federal Front, believes the results on May 23 would be different and in line with its expectations.

Speaking to TNM, TRS spokesman Abid Rasool Khan said, "We are of the opinion that the exit polls are not on the mark. We are confident that the results would be different from what has been predicted in the exit polls. It was a polarised election and people have not come out and stated their choice for their fear of reprisals."

Most exit polls predicted about 300 seats for the BJP-led NDA. Khan, however, was confident that the regional parties would do well and form a non-BJP and non-Congress government.

“Our calculations show that the BJP will not form a majority on its own and the Congress will be very poor in its numbers. We are confident of winning 16 seats in Telangana while the exit polls are predicting only a maximum of 12 to 13 seats. Similarly, in Andhra Pradesh, too, YSRCP chief Jagan Mohan Reddy is sure of winning more than 20 seats, contrary to the exit poll predictions. So, we still think the Federal Front will be a reality because none of the regional parties wants to come under the shadow of a national party," he added.

Asked what happens if the Federal Front is not part of the government, Khan said, "Assuming we don’t get the numbers, we will still keep the Front alive and fight for the rights for states, which is not happening at the moment.”

He said once the results were declared, TRS President and Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao's idea of Federal Front would get crystalised. "The regional parties will come together for a greater say in the government and for the rights and due share of their respective states," he said.

Almost all exit polls unanimously predicted that All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) and present Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi would retain his seat.

In the 2014 Lok Sabha Elections, the TRS won 11 seats, the AIMIM, BJP, TDP, YSRCP each picked up 1 seat and the Congress won 2 seats.

The results to the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections will be out on May 23.
