A one-and-a-half-year-old boy was charred to death after his father set himself and his two sons on fire at Talaghattapura on the outskirts of Bengaluru on Saturday. The 40-year-old father Srinivas Murthy was inebriated and allegedly committed the crime after a row with his wife.

One-and-half year-old Preetham Sai was charred to death in the incident while his elder sibling Chetan Sai (5) sustained third-degree burns and is currently receiving treatment in the hospital.

Srinivas, meanwhile, survived the incident and is being treated at a hospital after he suffered 30% burns. He hails from T. Narsipur in Mysuru district and married Premalatha, a resident of Thyagarajanagar in Bengaluru in 2010.

Police officials told Deccan Chronicle that the couple were at loggerheads for the past eight months. Srinivas had turned into an alcoholic and his wife Premalatha asked him to quit the habit. The couple often used to fight over the issue and Premalatha, dismayed with her husband, left their home two days ago.

Police added that Srinivas might have tried to kill himself along with his children. On Saturday night, after coming home at around 2:45 am, he doused his sleeping children in petrol and set them ablaze along with himself. The chilling incident came to the attention of neighbours after they heard the screams of the children. The children were rushed to the hospital after the fire was doused.

However, Preetham Sai succumbed to injuries at the Victoria Hospital's Burn Ward. "The younger sibling came with serious burn injuries. In cases like this, the victim's condition generally deteriorates through the day and we cannot confirm if the elder sibling will survive the burns," a doctor at Victoria Hospital told TNM.

Police officials at Thalaghattapura have taken up a case against Srinivas and have begun their investigation into the incident. The police had previously warned Srinivas to stay away from his wife and kids after Premlatha reported Srinivas' behaviour to them.

Earlier this month, she filed a complaint with the CK Achukattu police and police suspect that Srinivas was attempting to take revenge on Premlatha.
