Premam is undoubtedly becoming the Malayalam movie to be most debated about in recent times. Whether it’s about piracy or excessive drinking and smoking by the characters in the movie, Premam has remained in the limelight, even two months after its release. The latest to initiate a debate about the movie is filmmaker Kamal who at an event in Alappuzha said that the movie starring Nivin Pauly, Sai Pallavi and others was sending a wrong message to youngsters that it was ‘cool’ to drink and smoke. He also took a dig at the story plot saying the movie glorified an affair between a teacher and student. “Is the release of pirated CDs of such a movie a national disaster? Malayalis need to introspect,” he said. As soon as media houses started reporting on Kamal’s comments, most websites and social media pages of these news organizations were inundated with comments by Premam fans who accused Kamal of being hypocritical. Most pointed out to Kamal’s blockbuster movie in 1995 ‘Mazhayethum Munpe’ starring Mammootty, Shibana and Annie in which Annie a college student falls in love with and eventually gets married to Mammootty, her professor. But to be fair to Kamal, Mazhayethum Munpe did not glorify the relationship in any way.
