On February 23, 2016, the family was returning home after a movie at Maduravoyal and on the way, Prema on her two-wheeler took a sharp turn seeing a man in khaki in the middle of the road near Anna Nagar. The man started abusing Prema, her brother and husband who were coming behind her on another two-wheeler got down to question the man for being abusive. In a while, few other drivers and conductors reached the spot and beaten up her brother and husband.

By the time Prema reached back at the spot, the MTC drivers and conductors had left the place. She followed them to the CMBT depot, went and questioned them for beating up her brother and husband. One of the drivers started abusing and groped her, she immediately hit him with her slipper. The MTC trade unions went on a strike for four hours and asked the police to arrest the woman and her family. Later, four members had to spend two days in the Puzhal jail before being released.
