With about 20 days to go for the assembly elections in Tamil Nadu, the Election Commission on Wednesday morning seized Rs 50 lakhs unaccounted cash, in Melur district, from a private bus plying from Chennai to Madurai and has been submitted to the Treasury. 

The district election commission positioned their flying squad in Melur based on an anonymous tip.

Unaccounted for cash was seized from M.Radha, a private sector employee, who hails from Komathipuram village of Madurai district. A case has been filed against Radha in the Income Tax Department.

“The flying squads have been active 24x7 in Madurai district as a result of which we have seized a total of 1.54 crores cash. We have also registered 897 cases for violation of norms related to unaccounted for cash and kind,” said Veeraraghava Rao, District Collector to Thanthi TV.

Over 432 liters unauthorised liquour has been seized along with Rs.98 lakh worth items that were also unaccounted for since the enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct on March 4.
