In a tragic incident, a 70-year-old woman became the victim of a road accident and was killed on the spot in Madurai near the Rajaji Government Hospital.

The incident reportedly took place near Madurai’s Panagal Road, close to the Electricity Board office on Friday near the new building of the government hospital.

The accused has been identified as 59-year-old Thirunavakkarasu, a bank manager, who was speeding when he collided with an autorickshaw and a two-wheeler before he rammed into the sidewalk where the victim was standing. The identity of the victim has not yet been released.

The driver of the two-wheeler, 46-year-old Ayub Khan, and the 55-year-old auto driver named Pushparaj were also injured in the accident.

Madurai city police have registered a case against Thirunavukkarasu under section 304-A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

This incident comes days after CCTV visuals of a 13-year-old girl from Tirupur ran over an elderly man sitting outside her home, when driving. The victim, a 68-year-old man identified as V Gandhimanian, was admitted to the hospital after sustaining several broken ribs and other injuries in the accident.

Gandhimanian had been sitting outside his residence, on the side of the road, in Tirupur’s Ramakrishnapuram after dinner when the car ran over him. In the video, the girl steps out of the car after the accident, as a crowd gathers around the scene. The man was subsequently taken to a hospital where he underwent treatment and is recovering.

The minor’s family has taken care of all hospital charges and has requested the man’s family to not lodge any official complaints.  However, Gandhimanian allegedly approached the media on Thursday and spoke of the incident as the money provided by the girl’s family was not enough to sustain his hospital expenses.
