On Sunday, a raid was conducted by election observers at the Egmore residence of an AIADMK functionary. Rs.4.72 crore in cash was seized, and according to police, the house belonged to Vijay Krishnan, an MGR Mandram office bearer affiliated to the AIADMK.

The raid lasted around 4 hours, after the control office received information about the money. At around 3:30pm, a Flying Squad Team along with the returning officer of Egmore constituency reached the flat.

TG Vinay, deputy commissioner of the Chennai Corporation said that on Vijay opening the door, they found cash packed in bundles in two boxes. “Two courier covers with cash inside were thrown out of the window of the house. This information was conveyed to the income tax department. Later the deputy director of the Income Tax department and his team rushed to the house. Officials were informed by Vijay that a total of `4.72 crore was there.“ 

The raid was conducted at the Commander’s Court apartment complex, where several residents were surprised at the presence of policemen and officials. High security was employed until the raid was completed at 8 pm.

While the exact amount is still not known, officials have videotaped the entire raid for further investigation. Earlier on Friday , police and income tax officials raided the premises of a businessman, C P Anbunathan, in Karur in central Tamil Nadu and seized `4.8 crore, 12 currency-counting machines and an `ambulance'.
